In 2010, 6 American girls were given the name Fancy.
I will admit that I initially turned up my nose at Fancy, but it is growing on me. It's whimsical, with hints of the 18th century — a sort of hybrid of Fanny and Nancy. Fancy can mean extravagant or embellished, but it can also mean imagination or an impulsive crush. I think it's sort of playful and cute. Not the most serious name around, but definitely growing on me.
I can see where you are coming from with Fancy, putting aside the English word connections she is surprisingly appealing. I actually think Fancy could work well in France, since Fanny is Top 100 there.
ReplyDeleteFancy is the name of a Thomas Hardy character - perhaps in "Tess of the D'Urbervilles"?
ReplyDeleteIt's always seemed quaint, rustic and definitely 18th century to me.
Would love to see one IRL!
Makes me think of a country song that was popular for a while when I was a kid -- Fancy's a girl whose mom turns her out to prostitution. That's still all I can think about when I hear it. Clearly made an impression!
ReplyDeletei really like it! whimsical, i picture her as a pre-schooler, twirling around, holding her wand, skipping through the yard :)
ReplyDeletewonderful <3
Fancy is intriguing. I like it. I loved Reba McEntire as a child so I heard her song "Fancy" a lot. As such I see it as a name with some moxie ("I mighta been born just plain white trash but Fancy was my name!") as well as whimsy.
